Published: 13 Nov 2025, 3 p.m.

On Monday 3 November, CyBOK (Cyber Security Body of Knowledge) hosted its latest Showcase event at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh, bringing together academics, practitioners, educators, and industry partners both locally and from much further afield for a day of knowledge sharing, discussion, and collaborative insight.

Chaired by Professor Steve Schneider (University of Surrey), this showcase event highlighted CyBOK’s continued evolution as a community-driven resource supporting a wide range of cyber security roles and learning pathways.

Welcomes and future direction

The day opened with introductions before Professor Awais Rashid (University of Bristol) provided an overview of CyBOK’s latest developments and shared updates on its transition towards becoming a Community Interest Company (CIC). CyBOK’s core mission will continue, ensuring the Body of Knowledge continues to grow for the community, by the community, supporting both education and professional practice.

Topic Guide enhancements: responding to a changing landscape

Updates on two new Topic Guides was next on the agenda.

  • Professor Andrew Martin (University of Oxford) discussed the new Cloud Security Topic Guide, sharing themes which will be covered in the guide including cloud security characteristics, security domains, cloud security best practices, and secure design and implementation risks.

  • Victor Lough (Blueskytec Ltd.) shared updates on the new Security-Informed Safety Topic Guide which will include areas such as understanding visible and invisible threats, governance, safety and security design, incident response and resilience, and many more.

Both presentations highlighted CyBOK’s ongoing commitment to keeping its knowledge current and practically relevant.

Bridging bodies of knowledge

A joint session led by Dr Yulia Cherdantseva (Cardiff University) and Professor Steven Wong (Singapore Institute of Technology) explored the ongoing project researching the synergies between CyBOK and IS-BOK. Their discussion examined how the two frameworks align and complement each other, opening up opportunities for clearer learning pathways and improved integration within educational and training environments.

Spotlight on CyBOK-funded projects

After a mid-morning break, the Showcase turned to the practical and creative outputs emerging from CyBOK-funded initiatives:

  • CyBOK E-book Technical Feasibility Study: Lőrinc Thurnay (University for Continuing Education Krems, Austria) outlined work exploring a more interactive, user-friendly e-book format for CyBOK to broaden access and engagement.

  • Open Source CyBOK Practical Challenges and Learning Resources: Dr Cliffe Schreuders (Leeds Beckett University) showcased open-source learning resources designed to bring hands-on, scenario-based cyber security challenges into classrooms and training programmes.

  • Applying CyBOK in Business Change and Analysis: Mark Cross (Envista Consulting Ltd) presented case studies demonstrating how CyBOK can support business analysts and change professionals, helping embed cyber considerations earlier and more effectively in organisational processes.
